From Community Club to Championship Winners
What started as a small community chess club in 2017 has evolved into a local chess education organization. Through dedication, expert instruction, and a commitment to excellence, Chess Lions has helped hundreds of students discover their potential and achieve championship success.
Chess Lions was founded as a small community chess club at the Novi Public Library with a handful of enthusiastic students. Our mission was simple: make chess accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Introduced structured beginner and intermediate programs. Student enrollment doubled as word spread about our effective teaching methods and welcoming environment.
We ran our first ever chess tournament at the Novi Library drawing over 50 players and gained city-wide recognition.
Adapted to online learning during challenging times. Launched virtual classes and online tournaments, expanding our reach beyond geographic boundaries.
The Chess Lions team, at the time called "Windsor Chess Lions", would go on to win the K-8 Michigan Club Championship and set a record of 18.0/20 total points with 3 flawless finishers, a record we would come back to break in 2025.
Continued producing state championship winning teams to finish a hat-rick of 1st place finishes. Started to run more tournaments and events that steadily grew to reaching over 100 players.
Multiple state-level championship victories in both Michigan and Canada, with our proven coaching methods.
Established chess programs in libraries, schools, and community centers throughout the Detroit metro area.
Dozens of students have achieved significant rating gains and continued pursuing chess at competitive levels.
Hosted over 30 tournaments, providing competitive opportunities for players across the region.
Created welcoming programs for students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels from beginner to advanced.
Developed comprehensive curriculum and training materials recognized for consistent student improvement.
